Some companies offer extended insurance with zero excess — you pay nothing even for minor incidents. Ask when booking.
What to do in an accident
1. Stop, turn on hazard lights, place the warning triangle
2. Call the police: 155 (with injuries, also call 112 for an ambulance)
3. Do not move the vehicle until police arrive
4. Photograph all damage and the scene
5. Call your rental company — they'll guide you through the next steps
6. Obtain the police report (kaza raporu)
Traffic Fines in Turkey 2026
Turkish police use cameras extensively. Fines are sent to the vehicle owner (the rental company) and forwarded to the renter.
— Speeding (up to 30 km/h over): ~2,200 TL — cameras on highways and in cities
— Speeding (30+ km/h over): ~4,400–9,300 TL — licence may be confiscated
— Running a red light: ~1,500 TL — intersection cameras
— Using phone without hands-free: ~1,500 TL
— Seatbelt not fastened: ~1,100 TL — applies to all passengers
— Illegal parking: ~1,100 TL — car may be towed
— Drink driving: 9,300+ TL — licence revoked + criminal charges

Speed Limits
— Urban areas: 50 km/h
— Rural roads: 90 km/h

Toll Roads (HGS)
Turkey has automatic toll motorways using the HGS system (Hizli Gecis Sistemi). Rental cars are usually equipped with an HGS sticker — tolls are charged automatically. Ask your rental company how this works to avoid fines for unpaid tolls.
Driving in Turkey — Key Differences
What to expect:
— Right-hand traffic — same as continental Europe (drivers from UK, Ireland, Australia: switch sides)
— Roundabouts — traffic already on the roundabout has priority
— Pedestrian crossings — drivers don't always stop. Be alert as both a driver and pedestrian
— Headlights — daytime running lights required on rural roads
— Parking — yellow kerb line means no parking
— Honking — Turks honk frequently. It's communication, not aggression
Fuel
— Petrol (benzin): ~48–52 TL/litre (~€1.4–1.5)
— Diesel (motorin): ~45–48 TL/litre (~€1.3–1.4)
— Most stations are full-service (attendant fills your tank)
— Payment: cash or card accepted
Driving Territory
Standard rental territory: the Mediterranean coast from Alanya to Fethiye. Longer trips (Pamukkale, Cappadocia, Istanbul) should be agreed in advance. The company may approve them with adjusted mileage terms.
Driving outside Turkey in a rental car is not permitted.
